Hair extension stores have been a popular target for thieves this week, and the latest attempt ended with the shooting of a store owner in southwest Houston.
The robbery happened Friday at Mr. Indian Hair in the 4800 block of Almeda Road near Wentworth.
Authorities say two suspects wearing bandanas entered the store and tried robbing it. At some point, the owner, who family members identify as Kehlin Farooq, was shot once in the thigh before the suspects ran off empty handed. His family says he will be OK.
“It was obvious they were amateurs because they got scared when he came from the back. He start talking (expletive) and they weren’t saying anything,” a witness told Eyewitness News.
This is the second time Mr. Indian Hair has been targeted within the past year. Four women were arrested after they allegedly broke into the store, stole $12,000 worth of hair and then tried to sell it on Instagram.
Authorities say hair is in high demand.
Just Thursday, Eyewitness News reported on a series of break-ins at other Houston-area hair specialty stores. In fact, security cameras were recording as the thieves broke through drywall to enter inside a store on Westheimer near Highway 6 and stole about $9,000 worth of products.
Authorities have not yet determined whether all the crimes are connected.
